Ruth & Ed,
This is from another Phyllis, Phyllis Wedgeworth whose husband's ancestors were Esther Matthews and William Wedgeworth of York Co.,PA and Abbeville, SC. I would be greatly interested in knowing what sort of information you have on Victor Matthews and wife Isabell Edmiston. All we have on Victor is his will in 1796 Abbeville Co., SC, which lists his wife Isabell and children John, Isaac, James, Esther, Ann, Elizabeth & Rebecca. Victor was also found in the 1762 Chanceford Township, York C.,PA tax list. Our William Wedgeworth was also listed in this same township's tax list in 1772 & 1780. I have two other items which mention Victor in York Co. in 1755 & 1760. Victor is next listed as a juror in 1776-77 in Abbeville Co.,SC. Victor served in the Revolutionary War from SC also, as did William Wedgeworth.
William Wedgeworth and Victor Matthews are listed on the 1790 Census Abbeville, SC. In his will of 1796, Victor has William Wedgeworth as one of his witnesses, along with Moses Edmiston & Samuel McNeily. The executor is wife Isabell and a Joseph Matthews, who we believe is a brother to Victor.
This same Joseph Matthews also was a witness to William Wedgeworth's will just a couple of years later. Our thoughts are that the Esther Matthews who married William Wedgeworth was a SISTER to Victor Matthews, not the daughter Esther who is mentioned in his will.It makes sense that Victor would name one of his daughters after his sister. Otherwise the dates do not add up as "our" Esther was born 1732.
I would greatly appreciate hearing from you on this family. Anything you would have on Victor Matthews and Isabell Edmiston would really help us alot. Many thanks for your help. Phyllis
