Hugh mathews died in Southampton Co. Va. circa 1751. He hadseveral sons including Jacob, Joseph, William and Benjamin. In about 1760 his sons Jacob and Joseph lived on Swift Creek in what was then part of Edgecombe County NC. William and his wife lived on Fishing Creek in Edgecombe Co.after 1753. I think Benjamin lived in the Swift Creek area too. Jacob and Joseph moved to Cumberland County, NC before the Revolution. I believe Hughs son Jacob may have had a son who was killed in the Revolution because Jacob and his wife Martha were listed in Cumberland Co. court records as heirs of a son who died in 1777 (I think it was.) Hardy wasn't a son of Hugh. He may have been a son of Jacob or Joseph. Hardy served in the Wilmington District of the N.C. militia in the Revolution. Hughs son William had two sons named William and Jacob. Both served in the Revolution. Both were from Duplin County at the time of the war. This Williams son William died or was killed in service. AThe man who died had a teenage son named Arthur who survived the war. Arthur was a NC militiaman and pensioner.
