Dear Joyce, from the Abstracts of Deeds of Cumberland Co. N.C. book 2, page 140, George Erwin and wife, Ann sold to Thomas Matthews Sr. blacksmith, 100 acr. on Gum Swamp. Witt: John Matthews, John Ferris. 1765. So, your John is possibly the son of this John, son of Thomas Sr. From the book, Cumberland Co. A brief History,Thomas Matthews is listed as among the first settlers of Cumberland Co. There is suposed to be a census of 1755, according to the book, but I have never found it. I don't know if the Matthews were Scottish or not. One daughter of Thomas and Mary married a Newberry. As I go through the records, I will send what has John listed. Page 75 has land sold to Thomas Matthews -Witt; John Matthews, Jan. 1763. We didn't find any wills by any of these people. Sincerely, Ruth
