In 1823 Richmond County, NC John Matthews died leaving behind a wife, Delilah (Maiden name Cain) and several children.John’s minor children wereSmith, James, Burrel, and Siddy (the last a female). Ford Matthews his brother was appointed guardian. In 1830, Pike Co. AL Hicks Cain, the father of Delialah, became the guardian of the children. He is found in Dale County, AL in the 1840 census. It seems that Delilah was concerned that she wouldn’t receive what was due to her as she applied for many petitions. One talks of a tract split between 6 of John’s children. 4 are “infants under 21” and these are the same mentioned in Guardianship letters of Ford and Hix Cain and appear to be the children of John and Delilah, The first two, adults, are Chloe and Thomas, and Deliah states that they reside in parts unknown by her. She then appears to have been remarried by 22 Feb 1825 when she and husband David Matthews received 163.01 from John’s estate
I do not know if this Burrel Matthews is connected to you but based on the information you gave he seems to merit condideration. The actual documents associated with Burril and John's estate, as well as information on this Matthews Family can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~freehouse/Mathis%20Web%20Page/http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~freehouse/Mathis%20Web%20Page/
You will find the documents under Richmond County Estates, John, deceased 1823.
