How many John's do we have? Are we getting them all mixed up?
Recently discovered a John Mathews on the 1850 census of Autauga, Co. Alabama. Autauga is just across the river from Lowndes county. In-law related names of Dean and Jones are also found in Autauga. So if Nellie Dean married a Mr. Spears down in Louisiana (later known as Spearsville) and John Matthews diedthere in 1856, was this the same John Matthewsas on the 1850 Autauga Census? Not very probable.
On a payroll of militia ordered to the frontier of Twiggs County, Ga. Sept. 1813
a private J. Matthews is listed in the same company of men as John Dean and Minton Dean, later residents of Lowndes county, Al.
I propose that this is most likely the John Matthews, neighbor ofthe Deans of Lowndes county, and also the John Mathews found on the 1850 Autauga census, as John Deans daughter, Elizabeth (Dean) Jones and widow Nancy (Mathis/Mathews), were also residing in Autauga County 1850. The mystery follows. There were many Deans and Matthews and other SC pioneer names, of the same troup, that removed to Lousiana and on to Texas. How do we tie all of this together?
