Unless I am mistaken, my family comes from the same area. My g-g-grandfather, Johann Matthes emigrated from Germany in 1848, and settled in Monroe County, Michigan. My g-grandfather's name was Johann Christian Matthes, my grandfather's name was Walter Christian Otto Matthes, and my father's name is Wilbert Walter Matthes. It seems that of the seemingly few Matthes in this area, all are related in some way.
I will check with my dad to see exactly where we originated from, but I do think it is the same area. I am also familiar with a Gerald Matthes who is retired from the auto industry, and had come to this country because of his work from Wurttemberg via England about 20 years ago. He now owns a bakery in the Bloomfield, Michigan area. I believe he has a website, and has said that his family in Germany had been bakers.
My father has a cut your own Christmas tree farm in Monroe County, and also has a website if you type in Matthes Evergreen Farm. You will also find him listed if you just type in his name on Goggle, ect.
