Do you know anything about the Matthai family in San Francisco in the 1880 census? I am sure they are connected to my Lousia Lizzie? Matthai. I notice that the oldest son (24)of the family, John C.H. and the father, Richard, are both Blacksmiths and the son was born in MD. The rest of the children were born in CA including a 23 year old daughter. Louisa and her husband, Alexander Asnon (a Photographer) went from New York to San Francisco to get married - a long way in 1878. I would really like to know something about her family. In the census she states that she was born in 1858 in Berlin and came to the US in 1860. I can not find them in any census. We have discovered a number of letters from Alexander's family in France but nothing relating to the Matthai family or from Germany. Do you have any old pictures taken by Alexander Asnon? He had a studio in Elizabeth from about 1880 to sometime after 1900. We believe one or both or her parents were Jewish - or so the family rumors go! Thanks for any help you can give me.
