HI, Nikki - I am interested in knowing about "Mattey from France". What is locale of your census - the US? I was researching my great grandfather,John Mattey's family in England in the early 1990s. Ronald Mattey (he is posted on the genforum) and I have just been corresponding. My cousin (now deceased)wanted me to research the family because our grandmother had told her that the Mattey family, were Huguenots in France. The French spelling of the name was 'deMattit' They even had a crest with a bull in a charging stance. The Latin inscription read, "Who Next?". I started with John Mattey, father of my grandmother and worked my way back to John Matte who married Elizabeth ? in Ledbury, Herefordshire, Eng., 22 Jul 1739. Ref. Little Marcle Records, Herefordshire, England. I examined any number of records and found many variations of the spelling.

I gave up at that point without connecting to any French Mattey but I learned a lot about the Huguenots in the process. 'Letters of Denization and Acts of Naturalization for Aliens in England & Ireland'include many volumes of the Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland. They are available in a number of Libraries in the US. Now that we have the Internet, it should be much easier to access this information. After communicating with Ronald Mattey I thought it might be fun to utilize the Internet to see if I can fine more information on the family - especially in France.

I would like to hear from you. My e-mail address is probably posted under my name. Feel free to write to me unless we are bound by the GenForum policy. That is new to me.
Margaret D. Meyer
