I have a George "Muder"(spelling done by a census taker)in the 1870,Choshocton County, Ohio. He was married to a Mary. His age in 1870 was 29. He stated that he was from Gutenburg,Germany. Isn't this the Alsace-Lorraine region; sometimes in Germany and sometimes France??
My grandfather, Bernard Martter always said that our surname was not spelled as it was in France/Alsace-Lorraine. He said that his family came here EARLY? and fought in the French-Indian Wars. Oral history states that this Martter branch fought with Daniel Boone;Hoho.
