Stephan, The surnames Mater and Moter are not variations of the same name. Moter is an honest to goodness name, and I have found it transcribed from census records (never birth or marriage records) as Moler (the cross for the T is there but ignored) and as Moten (the R is mistaken for N unless one studies the handwriting on the whole census page and sometimes the one before and after to recognize the difference). If it is info on Moter you are seeking I may be able to help you. I have info on them to about the 14th century. But I know nothing about the surname Mater. Moter and Motter are not the same either. Different nationality and pronounciation. Moter has been pronounced like the car engine motor since about the beginning of the 20th century. Prior to that it sounded something like Mowtear. Motter sounds like it looks (M)otter. Hope this helps.
