French Matt used to be Matte

I'm looking for information on Matt's in Canada. Though not German descended Matt's. Church records in the area show that Matt used to have an 'e' on the end. I have a 32 year old newspaper clipping about an Elizabeth Donalda Burnie (nee Matt) which states her family (Matt) sailed from France to the new world in the early 1600's. I am related to this particular Matt (though as yet, haven't quite figured out how) and would like to know the truth to this story. I'm doubting any records (if there ever even were any)from early 1600's exist or if they do, how would I find them?
thanks for any help you may be able to give.
Melissa Matt.
