Hi Tina,
There are at least three different sources for the name MATSON in England:-
1:)- The MATSON family who were landowners of MATSON, Gloucester. The MATSON estate was left to a husband of a female MATSON so it looks like this MATSON family died out.
2:)- MATSON families who immigrated from scandinavian countries like Sweden, etc. Original spelling was probably MATTISON or MATTESON, etc.
3:)- MADDISON families that became misspelled; these are typically found in the north of England.
I myself am related to the Kent MATSONs. As the early Kent MATSONs were mariners/salters and there are records of early scandinavian sounding MATTISON salters in London it is possible that the Kent MATSONs were originally Scandinavian merchants/mariners.
