Joyce,

Let me look through the census' I have saved from my research again. I'm not paid up at ancestry.com to look up anything now, and only have what I saved. The earliest census I have is in 1850 for the Tazwell area, and it didn't show her, but again, being married in 1829, she wouldn't. It is possible that your Charity is a daughter to Walter(2) Matney or Brooks Matney. Walter(2) would have been about 56 yr. old at the time of her marriage. I'm not sure of Brooks age at the time. I'm thinking she was Walter's due to her name.

Walter Matney(2)'s wife was Charlotte "Charity" Young, and she was 75 or 78 in 1850, making her born in 1773 to 1775. Walter Jr. or Walter(2) was 78 at the time.

His brother, Brooks Matney's wife, was Janette Young, and they were supposed to be sisters.

Walter Matney Jr(3) was also living there, and he is shown to be 52 at the time, and married to a woman named Betsy, who was 26. She could have been his daughter, but the other two children show up as Joseph 4 yr. old, and what looks like another Walter at 2 yr. old. It's names was shortened to WM on the census. Betsy could be short for Elizabeth some way, I don't know.

This is where several get mixed up at how many Walter's there were. The Walter Matney Sr., listed in the Tazwell Co. 1850 census, is actually Walter Mattingly's(1)'s son, and Brooks Matney's brother. Walter Mattingly(1) was born in 1735 at or around St. Mary's Maryland. By my research, and though I can't prove it, I think he was John Mattingly's son, and Cesar Mattingly's grandson. This is the Walter who fought in the Revolutionary War. He is supposed to be buried in Wythe Co. Virginia.

Now, we go 10 years later, and find them again on the Grundy Va. census in Buchanan Co.. The funny thing is, they seem to not have aged one bit, as they show Walter(2) being 80, and Charity being 74. This is where the census can be totally wrong on birth-dates. Someone in the family talking to the census taker guesses them.

Here though, Walter(2) is staying with his son, Walter(3). Now, they show Walter(2)'s wife being Elizabeth, and being 35 yr. old. Walter(3) shows he is 40 yr. old. They live next door to a Ratliff family, and David Matney, who was shown to be 55 yr. old at the time, and married to Mary,
who was 45 yr. old.

In the 1850 census, it shows my GG Grandfather, Daniel Matney, to be 35 years old, and staying with his father, Walter(2). In the 1860 census, Daniel was boarding with a Ratliff family in Grundy, and was shown to be 40 years old, 5 to 7 years off. Again, I doubt he was the one who spoke to the census taker. It shows Daniel to be 57 yr. old in the 1870 census. I would say he was actually 55, and that would be correct for the 20 years prior.

The last note I found was where I had copied from someone else, and says that Walter(2) Matney did have a daughter named Charity Matney Childers. Below is the info for the website I had. The birth-dates are off here though. Walter Matney Sr. who married Mary Polly ? was born in 1735, as recorded by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
