Will, I have researched some on the Matney side of my family & you will find the name Mattingley as you move back thru time past. It is an English name. As the census taker came around, he wrote what he heard & you will find many names are changed.

What you see in the census is so hard to decipher, but as a Walter Matney died, the NEXT Walter becomes the Sr. that you are seeing.

You need to look at census from Washington Co. VA. That is what Tazewell, Buchanan, Wise, Russell & even the State of Kentucky were once part of. I think you are very close to break thru. Happy hunting! Kathy Sutherland Finn
