A biography/family history of John H. Matney, Musselshell, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 685 & 686. His ancestors came from England and first settled in Virginia.
John H. Matney was born, 15 Mar 1865, son of Thomas W. and Susie (Wilson) Matney. Thomas W. was born, in 1829, spent all his life in North Carolina, was a Methodist minister and circuit rider, lived for many years at Lenoir, NC; died 1895, Montezuma, NC. Susie Wilson was born in Wilkes County, NC, and died at Walkertown, NC, in 1907. They had seven children.
John H. Matney was educated in the public schools of East Tennessee and in 1891 graduated from the medical department of U.S. Grant University of Chattanooga, TN. For two years he practiced law at Roane Mountain, TN, then for seven years in the Old Indian Territory (OK). In 1900, he moved to Atlanta, KS, and in 1902 came to Birney, MT, where he stayed until Oct 1916 when he located to carry on a general medical and surgical practice at Musselshell, MT. He owned a 320 acre cattle ranch three miles west of Musselshell on the Musselshell River. He was also an ordained minister of the Methodist church.
In 1891, Chuckey, TN, John H. Matney married Miss Cordia A. Donnelly, daughter of Major R.H.M and Eliza (Allen) Donnelly.
Matney children: Pauline (Mrs. W.K. Harris, Delphia, MT), Thomas W. (farmer at Sheridan, WY), John H., Jr.
John H. Matney died 31 Dec 1830, Age 65, Yellowstone Co., MT. (Note: An obituary of Dr. John H. Matney is published in the Billings Gazette, Billings, MT, 4 Jan 1931)
