I descend from the same Mathis family as you.Thomas had a brother named Clarender that was my great grandfather.Their father was Martin Mathis who married Nancy Walker first and Elizabeth Hooper second after the death of Nancy. I have Nancy's family back to the first settlers of Kentucky (before Daniel Boon). We both descend from Elizabeth his second wife.
I had been told that Martin's father was named William and only discovered earlier this year that William was the uncle that raised Martin, Daniel and their other siblings.Their parents were Nehemiah Mathis Jr. who married Susan Peterson.the daughter of Lawrence Peterson Sr.. Nehemiah's sister Sophia, was married to William Wooley who raised Martin and his siblings, after the death of their parents. This is where William came from, as the name for the father of Martin, Daniel and their siblings.
William Wooley (who died in 1804 in Ohio) and his family moved to Ohio taking the siblings of Martin and Daniel with them.Martin and Daniel had settled in Kentucky, which was a county of Va..
In 1790 the state of Va., included Kty., Va., and W.Va.,
ALL PART OF THE STATE OF VA..
Martin's first wife Nancy WALKER. descends from the WALKER family that were the first settlers of Kentucky.I hope I haven't confused you.If you need more information on the Mathis or Walker family, before 1800, I will try to help.
It is really important to know the formation of the counties and states in the late 1700 and 1800's.
