Mathieu/Mathie - French Revolution
Posted by: Lorna MacLean Date: April 07, 2001 at 08:57:09

I have been told this story: My g.g.g. grandfather: Robert Mathie was the son of a French Mlle. Mathieu who came to Scotland (during the French Revolution) with her family and were apparently put up as guests by the Duke of Montrose. The story goes that she married possibly a "Graham", and had two sons. I don't know whether the marriage soured of whether Mr. Graham died, or even if there was a marriage but she ended up alone bringing her two boys up in Lanark Glasgow. She set up house teaching young girls of the area, French and needlework. She dropped the "u" at the end of Mathieu and became Mrs. Mathie with her two sons Robert and ?.

I don't know if anyone can help me with this. I would be delighted if somebody could.
