Hi Peter,
We've been doing some more research on William Mathias. This is what we found out:
William was employed as an assistant to the keeper of Puffin Island on April 29, 1847, by Liverpool Dock Trust. He was still on the island in 1851 as a signalman's assistant, aged 15, living with his uncle, James Adams (the keeper) and their extended family. William transferred from Puffin Island to Point Lynas telegraph on 31st July, 1855. He then became an assistant at Holyhead telegraph on April 30th, 1857 and the keeper on 3rd February, 1859. We noted that the Dock Trust consistently called Mathias 'Mathews' from 1847 until 1863, when they corrected their own records by crossing out Mathews and writing in 'Mathias'.
