I am currently researching William Mathias, lighthouse keeper, because I've written a book with my husband called Lighthouses of Liverpool Bay. Mathias is featured in our book, in the Ormeshead chapter. Recently, we met one of Mathias's decendants, Mrs Olive Lawrance. She is the great granddaughter of William Mathias, but her father, William Pemberton Mathias, was also a keeper, at Point Lynas, where she was born. When we visited Olive, recently, she gave us loads of information about her great grandfather. But best of all, she gave us a photograph, in uniform at Ormeshead Lighthouse, c. 1900.
Mathias intrigues me and we've actually been researching him today, at Liverpool Record Office. We think he may have changed his name to Mathias, from Mathews, but we haven't proved that yet. The reason we think this is because we can't find a Mathias living on Hilbre Island during the 1830s, but we can a William Mathews, who was dismissed in 1838.
We have made a database of lighthouse keepers employed by MD&HB. It can be accessed on the Cheshire Family History Society website.
