I am researching the Matthews, Mathews, Mathes family heritage due to my wifes Matthews ancestry, her GFather: Joseph Arthur Matthews of Logansport, Bienville, LA. His roots originally go to MD. The matthews of MD memoved to other nearby states. Then how they spread out their wings. As did all pioneers. Seems like you really did hit the nail on the head with the connections. Whether a clerical error of given names; ie: Daniel or Samuel as interpreted by clerk. He wrote down what he thought he heard. Or to a person being Daniel Samuel Mathews or Samuel Daniel Mathews. Have encountered similar exchanges all the time with my searches. As in, Mathews in the 1st generation and Matthews or Mathes in the next generation. Families congregated near to or especially next to each other. So it was very common practice for a parent to give to their children part of the land they owned. Families lived by each other for support then. Have gotten a lot of good information from Ancestry.com's US and State Census records. Keep up your good work and support.
