I am not sure which Thomas you are referring to but the earliest one that we know of died in Chatham co, NC in 1785. You will see records of a Thomas Matthews about the same time associated with a Rutherford, his father-in-law, but this is not our line.

To make matters even more interesting when tracing this family his grandaughter, the child of Ezekiel, married his great grandson whom we refer to as Thomas IV. She, Juliather Matthews, was his first wife and you guessed it they lived in Gwinnett county.
