According to Civil War Pension papers he died Jul 1864 somewhere between Dalton, Ga and Atlanta. Census records indicate that he was born about 1835. Mary was alive in 1901, according to Pension papers, but I cannot find any record of her after that.
Pension papers also say that the couple were married in 1856 but Gwinnett marriage records indcate that they were married in 1860. Her parents, if one goes by the Census, were John and Amy Waits. The couple had 3 children, Annie E, William J and John W H. She was living with Annie E in the 1900 Census.
My line comes from another of Thomas and Nancy Matthews' children so I really do not know any more about this couple but if you have questions about Thomas and his ancestors please feel free to ask.
Jeanne
PS Be careful as NC and SC have more than one Thomas Matthews living in the same era.
My cousin has had his Matthews y-DNA tested and we are hoping for more details to emerge from that source.
