I am 99% sure that the person in question is Lemuel J. Matherly (Sr.). Rather than emigrating from Scotland, however, he was more likely born in Virginia, probably in Pittsylvania Co., and later died in Indiana. He was the son of Israel Matherly, who was once said to have been a sea captain (or pirate) born in Scotland. Alas, this family legend that had been detailed on a very useful old chart done by some of Lemuel's line has mostly failed the test for factual accuracy, on this specific issue. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if there really is a Scottish connection somewhere, but I'm not sure how just yet. Why don't you e-mail me directly, so that we can discuss all of this more in depth?
