Hello Charlotte,
First, there is significant new information concerning this part of the family.Daniel Jr, the brother of William Wentworth went to Baltimore County, Maryland before 1704 (he is in the 1704 tax list). In 1735 there is a marriage recorded in St Johns Parish of a William Matheny who marries Elizabeth Banbury. This is the William some call William "B" (where he got that "initial" is another issue).Because Daniel is the only Matheny in Baltimore it is highly likely HE is the father. In 1737, William and Elizabeth have a son Daniel.About 1750 William and Elizabeth move to western Fairfax County (my research shows that is the area that would become Loudoun County in 1557).In the tax list of Loudoun County, you see all the Matheny family in the same area which to me would indicate they are all family.William (who was declared exempt from Tithables) and sons Daniel (who is the Daniel who died in Bourbon County, Kentucky in early 1800), William Jr, JOhn, Nathan, Joseph, Moses, James (also known as Ensign James from the Revolutionary War). Also a daughter Elizabeth. There is NO RECORD of a Matheny born in Stafford County after Ann Matheny the daughter of William and Ann on March 18th, 1755.The Matheny famiily sold the hope land in 1756.If you look at the dates the Matheny's appear in the Tithable List of Loudoun County, they each appear about the time they turn 16, i.e. James was born in 1753 and in 1769 he appears on the list with William Matheny responsible for his tithable.
Based on the new information, what you find about William "B" and Elizabeth Banbury (Parker?? maybe a second wife?? but nothing documented) on the internet is incorrect.
I am writing about alot of the early history of the Matheny/Metheny/Mathena family in the newsletter of Association of the Descendants of the Immigrant Daniel Mathena.
