No I haven't actually visited the courthouse, but I do have a copy of their marriage license that is on file. Nothing shows in the particular manner you are speaking of. My grandmother tells me he was never married before Mary Elizabeth.

Don't give up though, something will show up. One thing that I have found to be helpful is when looking at the census records, it pays to looks at who the neighbors surrounding a particular family is. You may take a look at the census again and take note of the families that live around your Matheny. There may be clues there. Usually if another Matheny family is close, then chances are they are related and you can check into that family to find more clues.
