Grimsley/Jaquess/Lacy/Matheny
Earl Jaquess, Terry Depp, Cindy McLaughlin, and other interested parties --
On my website covering Andrew Jackson Lacy's military service in the Civil War (see http://home.cinci.rr.com/mlacy/AJLacyhttp://home.cinci.rr.com/mlacy/AJLacy) I have a transcription of a letter from G. B. Jaquess to A. J. Lacy, with an addendum to Margaret E. Grimsley. To read the transcription, go to http://home.cinci.rr.com/mlacy/AJLacy/documents/c620220a.htmhttp://home.cinci.rr.com/mlacy/AJLacy/documents/c620220a.htm .
But I'm a little confused! I thought this was Gabriel Benton Jaquess that served in the Civil War, but the Gabriel Benton Jaquess that was a brother to Isaac Jaquess would have been somewhere around 50 years old, wouldn't he? Seems a little too old to be fighting, although many did. Is this one and the same person?
Margaret E. Grimsley, meanwhile, I believe is the Margaret Ellen Grimsley (b.1843) who was a daughter of Joseph Grimsley (1811-1903).
The Lacy connection, of course, is this:
(a) A. J. Lacy's mother was Keziah Grimsley.
(b) Keziah was Joseph Grimsley's sister.
(c) A. J. Lacy and Margaret Ellen Grimsley were first cousins.
(d) And the Jaquess's were connected by Keziah and Joseph's sister Margaret Grimsley's second marriage to Isaac Jaquess.
(e) Furthermore, when Keziah and Joseph and Margaret's sister Scytha Grimsley died in 1838, her husband Samuel Matheny remarried to Esther Lacy, A. J. Lacy's aunt.
(f) When A. J. Lacy failed to return from the Civil War, Samuel Matheny's brother John Anderson Matheny (who had lost his wife Lucinda Deatherage Matheny) remarried A. J. Lacy's "widow", Margaret Elizabeth Byers Lacy.
These convoluted interrelationships have my brain doing gymnastics! But I'm very interested in all this, because I believe the Grimsley's, Lacy's, and Matheny's at least were all close to one another in Roane County before they moved to Jackson County, TN. They may have even moved together, or about the same time.
--> Earl Jaquess: have I got Gabriel Benton Jaquess right?
