Due to phonetic spelling, it is helpful to do searches for people just using the first 3 or 4 letters of the last name, but look for them in the area that you know that they married in.
In this case, I know that Mary Gidley married someone very shortly after the 1860 census was taken, and she very likely married a man who lived close to her whom she became acquainted with. The Gidley's lived in Calhoun County AL, and their youngest daughter married one of my Glovers, so I have a feel for this family.
There were 2 brothers living in close proximity to the Gidley family in 1860.They were John F Mathena and his brother W. A. Mathena.
Previously, these 2 brothers lived with their widowed mother in Chatooga GA, but the whole family came out of TN.
1860 Ranges 8 & 9 Calhoun Co AL
John F Mathena 29TN
Martha Mathena 32
Rowland Mathena 4
Mary E Mathena 5/12
Sophrona Mathena 36
Adeline Mathena 8
also
W A Mathena 35 TN
Matilda N Mathena 27
Josephine M Mathena 6
Wm E Mathena 5
Colonel E Mathena 1
In 1850:
Broom Town Valley, Chattooga, Georgia
Sarah Matheny 53b TN
Thomas B Matheny 27 TN
Alexander Matheny 25 TN
Suffrona S Matheny 22 TN
Francis Matheny 21 TN
John T Matheny 19 TN.......the T may be an F
Joseph J Matheny 17 TN
Greenberry Matheny 30 TN
Robert A Matheny 4 AL
Mary E Matheny 3AL
It sort of looks like John F Mathena lost his wife soon after the 1860 census, and then he married Mary Gidley. He must have died very soon after he married Miss Gidley.
It further looks like his son Rowland Matheny went to live with other relatives for the 1870 census instead of living with his stepmother:
Township 5 Range 8, De Kalb, Alabama
James R King 58
Parmela King 50
John N King 21
Silburn King 10
Minar R Stewart 18
Saml D Stewart 16
Rolard Mathena 14
I hope this helps.
Wendy
