“DIED
Mrs. James E. Jones of Carbon died last Thursday from the effects of a stroke of paralysis. The funeral was held at the M.E. church Saturday at 10 o’clock and was conducted by Rev. A. T. Cupp, assisted by Rev. F.A. Meade. Miss Elizabeth Metheny was born in Ohio, August 6, 1822. A few years of her childhood was spent in Ohio, when she moved with her parents to Virginia, remaining in this state until the close of the war. On February 10, 1848 she was united in marriage to James E. Jones and to this union ten children were born. All the children with the exception of one [my grandfather, James Dowlen Jones, born Brooks, Iowa 1869] were born in Virginia, two dying in infancy. The family came to Iowa in 1865, settling on a farm south of Brooks, where they remained for 17 years, then removing to a farm near Carbon. Mr. Jones died 16 years ago. Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Jones has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Uriah Hunter, living in Carbon for the past 11 years. Five daughters and three sons mourn the loss of an honored and faithful mother. The daughters are: Mrs. Sarepta Mack, Mrs. Sophia Montgomery and Mrs. Mary Fry, all of whom reside in California; Mrs. Jennie Morgan, of Sidney; Mrs. Uriah Hunter, of Carbon. The sons are: A.C. Jones, of Nodaway; R.B. Jones of McClellan, Iowa; and Dr. J.D. Jones, of Olds, Canada. Mrs. Jones was a mother who devoted her early life to the care and rearing of her large family. She was never identified with any church, but attended when possible the services of the Baptist church. Blest with good health the greater part of her life, she thoroughly enjoyed the work that naturally accompanies the rearing of a large family. This same habit of industry marks the closing years of her life – always desiring to do something for someone at all times. The sorrowing ones have the sympathy of the community."
