Mastin Barnes

Mastin Barnes is found in 1901 Brighton Twp., Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada census. He was born 16 Oct 1881, and at the time of the census was living with his grandmother Matilda Barnes Whales and her husband John Whales. (Transcribed data calls him "step-son" with the suggested correction "change step-son to grandson").

I believe that Mastin Barnes was probably the grandson of Matilda and her first husband, John Barnes, through their son George Barnes b. 1859. Although this is a lot of speculation, I suspect that George Barnes married a Mastin girl, hence the name Mastin Barnes.

Can anyone give me anything to substantiate any of this? Are there any Mastin families in Northumberland County in the mid-1800s?

Thanks for any help anyone can give.
