Hi Carole
A couple of years ago I was in contact with Eugene Spencer in America and he had a painting by J.Mastin of a bowl of blue flowers. He was asking if I thought it was painted by John Mastin the artist from Sheffield England. I compared signatures and they were very similar except J.M. of Sheffield seemed always to use his full name John, rather than the initial J and he was predominantly a portrait painter. He painted the portrait of my great grandfather Joseph Mastin. I'm afraid I couldn't definitly confirm that the Blue flowers picture, if it is one and the same, was painted by John Mastin of Sheffield that Helen Sowerby mentions. JM of sheffield is also in my family tree and I would be interested to hear from Helen.
