MASSEY, Ada
MASSEY, Ada Campbell March 9, 1914 - May 1, 2009 On the evening of May 1st 2009, at the age of 95, Ada Massey died peacefully at Cottonwoods Care facility in Kelowna - daughter and friend by her side. Always the Scottish lass to be followed, never one to be led, Ada would have much preferred it be written that she left on her own initiative to "take the low road home". Ada leaves behind her daughter, Barbara, her son Doug (Sandi), her four grandchildren Brenda (Stephen), Linda (Rob), Graeme (Katherine) and Kevin, her great grandson, Ethan and her beloved nieces and nephews, who will all miss her greatly. Born in Lochore, Fifeshire, Scotland, Ada was the ninth of eleven children. Her family emigrated to Canada (Burlington, Ontario) in 1920 when she was only six. Ada achieved great academic success throughout her schooling and went on to work in a number of professions ranging from legal secretary to real-estate broker. As a "Brown Owl" brownie leader she fell in love with a scout leader, Arthur Massey - they were married for 38 years until Arthur died in 1974. After living in Mono Mills for many years and then Toronto, Ada moved to Kelowna, B.C. in 1993. Ada was a world traveler and trekked across Europe, Turkey, North and Central America, New Zealand, India, and S.E. Asia. She celebrated her 90th birthday while traveling in Vietnam. Lawn-bowling was a passion - Ada was a dedicated lawn bowler, coach and instructor - and the game took her as far as Australia to participate in matches. She was also an avid Bridge player. Ada’s spirit and spontaneity was unstoppable and earned her the well-deserved nickname, "Energizer Bunny". Anyone who ever tried to match her stride on a hike could attest to her drive and determination. A memorial service will be held in Kelowna at Springfield Funeral Home on Sunday, May 10, at 1:00 pm. Also, a celebration of Ada’s life will be held in Ontario at the end of May (please contact family for details). Donations in lieu of flowers will be welcomed in Kelowna by the Central Okanagan Hospice Association and the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation (Cottonwoods Dogwood unit). Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com, 250-860-7077.
