I am trying to identify the parents of Rebecca _____ Witherspoon wife of Alexander Witherspoon. I have the court documents stating that she was given land from her GRANDFATHER Nicholas Massey who died in 1818 in NC.
I had thought she was the daughter of Benjamin Massey, son of Nicholas, but all researchers say that Nicholas did NOT have a son Benjamin. Hr husband Alexander Witherspoon was mentioned in the will of Benjamin Massey who died in Wilson County, TN in 1814....he owed Benjamin money.
She can't be the daughter of Benjamin, son of Abraham for two reasons:
1) he was to young to be her father as she had children in TN between 1810 and 1820;
2) if he were her father then Nicholas would be her great grandfather and Abraham would be her grandfather.
She seems also connected to the Sherrill family because she named her children for members of this family,i.e., Enos Sherrill Witherspoon, Elihu Witherspoon, Lewis Acquilla Witherspoon, and Thurza Witherspoon. This follows the pattern of giving children the names of close relatives.
Again, I can PROVE her relationship to Nicholas....but I am at a loss when it comes to finding her parents....it was NOT Benjamin the son of Abraham.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
