I was hoping that John Massey's 1819 will would mention his daughter Ruth, but John specially names just sons Lebo and Nicholas. He refers to his wife but does not name her. The transcription below is mine from a copy of a document from Haywood County now housed in the North Carolina State Archives. I have been very conservative in adding punctuation marks, even though there is not a single one in the document. You will note some unusual captilizations and lack thereof, was well as some peculiar spellings. The surname is spelled Massy in the document, except for Massay in the first reference to Lebo, which is spelled Leboo througout. JOHN MASSEY WILL AND TESTAMENT, NOVEMBER THE 28, 1819 HAYWOOD COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA In the name of God, Amen. Being in perfect helth and present of minde and Caroling to mind that it is onse apointed for man and woman to die and after deth to Come to Judgment not knowing how long I have to live, I Make this my last will and testament, and is as follows. To My Son Leboo Massay I leave my land and plantation with all the improvements as far down as the Cove branch. The other part of the land I leve to My Son Nicholas massy Where he now lives. all my living Stock I leave to Leboo massy, and house hold furnature and farming tools and all my Machanic Tools to my Son Leboo Massy, and he is to find his mother asoficient montainanc or She is to have her thirds her life time and at her decese Leboo Massy is to have it, and all the Rest of my Children I leave one dollar a pece.
