Jane,
In reading through your Madison Co., TN deeds, I make out the following information. Please let me know if you agree.
Andrew Massey of Madison Co., TN died in early 1857, probably in Madison Co.
His wife was Mary Massey who was living in or moved back to Chesterfield District, South Carolina (presumably where the family originated since Hugh Elbert was supposed to have been born ther in 1828).
At the time (1857) there were seven living children of Andrew and Mary:
1. Alvin
2. Calvin (must have been confusing at dinner time)
3. Hugh
4. Harriet (wife of Richard Arrant)
5. Elizabeth (wife of Robert horton)
6. Sarah (wife of Amos Catoc)
7. Frances (wife of James Eubanks) (called Franky)
Power of Attorney on the land was simultaneously given to an Alvin Massey of Lancaster Dist., SC.Alvin may have been a brother of or uncle of Andrew (or, possibly his father since his first son was named Alvin).
Some of the children sold their shares in the land soon after to Elbert W. Massey of Shelby Co., TN.Hugh's middle name was Elbert leading me to suspect that Elbert W. was a close relative (again perhaps a brother of Andrew).
Avery Hunt and John Exum seem to have ended up with the property in Madison County which totaled over 220 acres.I would guess that property of that size may have been Bounty Land awarded for service in the War of 1812 or even the Revolutionary War.That may be a place to look for Andrew Massey.
if you agree with this interpretation, I am going to include it in my genealogy as soon as I discover where the Lancaster and Chesterfield Districts are in SC.
Thanks so much for some excellent leads on a dead end in my genealogy work.
