There was more than one Hardy Massey from Durham/Orange Co. NC.There was a Hardy Massey born about 1814, who's will is dated May 28, 1885-witnessed by John Markham. His wife was Louisa and he had two sons, California Massey and Patrick H. Massey.California Massey left a will.Patrick H. Massey died intestate.I read somewhere that this Hardy Massey may be the son of Joshua Massey 1780-1835.
Patrick H. Massey's wife was married to a Virgina B. Massey.I cannot read the names of the children on the estate papers. The handwriting is really bad.
California Massey had a son named Hardy Massey, born 1824, and that Hardy Massey had a son name California, I think!
The Hardy Massey born in 1824 married Sarah Markham, dau. of Wiley Markham.
Interestingly, Sarah Markham b. abt. 1821 is the sister of Levi Markham b. 1825, who was first married to Lotia Massey-the Massey I'm looking for.
I have a hunch that something happened and Lotia and Levi split and she married a Williams because that is what the "bad handwriting" looks like on Patrick Massey's estate papers.
Levi Markham served in the civil war so I wonder if Lotia married this Williams person while he was gone, may-be thought to be dead.Years later, abt. 1866,he married a Sarah Chisenhall Vickers.I think her first husband was Washington Marion Vickers who died in the civil war.She was pretty much left out of her father's will, but her child with Washinton, seems to have been rasied by her parents and that child was provided for in her father's will. The children she had with Levi were not.
Lotia and Levi also had a son, named Hardie.
I can get more on the Masseys if you want.
