I, too, am interested in Masseys from the Cheshire area.It is my understanding (from a book by Molly Gillen, "The Masseys, Founding Family" (Ryerson Press, Toronto, 1965) that Geoffrey MASSY who was born in 1570 in Knutsford, Cheshire, England, left England with his wife, Ellen Fox, in 1630 after some trouble with the church. His father was also called Geoffrey.Ms Gillen states that "Geoffrey Massy could trace his pedigree to Hamon Mascei, vassal of Hugh Lupus, a Norman noble who granted hamon various lands on hsi vast Cheshire estates, and it has been deduced that he was probably a member of the family of Massey of Sale."
Geoffrey settled in the Salem, Massachusettes area, a few generations later, my ancestor, Daniel Massey moved to Canada in 1802.I am descended from his daughter, Betsy.A son, also Daniel, founded the Massey Harris tractor company which was known world-wide.Raymond Massey, the actor, and Vincent Massey, the first Canadian-born Governor General of Canada, come from this line.I have a fair bit of information about the Canadian Masseys, mostly gleaned from books about the family, from Betsy downwards my info is from family records.I would be most interested in any information either about Geoffrey's English roots, or about American descendents.I understand the Massey's were a very prolific family whilst in the USA, some families having 10 or more children.Any pieces of the puzzle would be appreciated.I am willing to share my info.Connie McCann-Wilkes (nee Christian)
