If anyone is researching Maskells in Canada (Cape Breton or Prince Edward Island) or in the U.S. (Massachusetts), then I would like to hear from you. My grandmother is the daughter of James Albert Maskell, born 1860 Oct, baptized 1860 Nov 25 at Arichat, Isle Madame, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. A visit there turned up the following information for this family, as well as a possible lead for the origins of the Maskell's of Jeddore, Nova Scotia.
In the holdings of the Isle Madame Historical Society are the records of the Arichat Anglican Church Records, which include Arichat Births 1828-2000, Arichat Marriages 1828-1886, and Arichat Deaths 1829-1955.

(6) 1859 Jan 24, baptism of Sarah Louisa Ann Maskell, dau. of William and Ann

(8) 1862 Nov 26, birth; 1863 Jun 10, baptism of Caroline Alexandra Maskell, dau. of William and Ann
(9) 1865 Aug 2, birth; 1865 Dec 19, baptism of Frederic Fenwick Maskell, son of William and Ann
Shortly after 1865 the family removed to Prince Edward Island, Lot 45 (now Souris) where they are found in the 1881 Canadian census giving (for all 8 family members) their birthplace as "Cape Breton," their religion as "Church of England," and their nationality as "American."
William Maskell died there in Souris, PEI, 1890 Jan 17, age 78 years, which gives an estimated birth date of 1812 (and is consistent with his age given in 1881 as 68).
There is a land petition of 1818 (no. 2025 / Mfm no. 15795) in which Thomas Maskell, "a native of Cape Breton, has a wife and nine children. He asks a lot between Low Point and Lingan." This petition was granted and then challenged by John Murphy (no. 2029). I do not know the outcome of this grant, however, the following additional records from the Arichat Anglican Church may provide identification of this Maskell family. . .
1833 Apr 26 Hugh McLeod and Sarah Maskill
1833 Sep 26 James Campbell and Catherine Maskill
1837 Oct 3 Robert Maskill, of Arichat, and Mary McNeil, of Arichat
1839 May 1 John McCehren, of Arichat, and Ann Maskell, of Arichat
1839 Jul 4 Benjamin Welling, of Arichat, and Elizabeth Maskill, of Arichat
1845 Jul 14 William Maskill, of Arichat, and Ann Proctor
1850 Jun 28 John McCaskill, of Arichat, and Euphemia McDonald, of Arichat
1851 Jan 16 Malcolm McUsbic, of L'Ardoise, and Margaret McAsKill of L'Ardoise
It appears that these marriages between 1833 and 1845 may account for 6 of the 9 children Thomas Maskell reports having in his 1818 land petition. If the 1850 and 1851 marriages of John McCaskill and Margaret McAsKill are also the children of Thomas, then this accounts for 8. However, it seems more likely to me that the John Maskell of Jeddore is more likely to be somehow related to Thomas and his wife Catherine, both of whom died in Arichat . . .
Burial 1836 Dec 31 Thomas Maskill, of Arichat, age 72 years, of Asthma
Burial 1858 Jul 21 Catherine Maskill, of Arichat, age 79
These are all of the Maskell/Maskill/McCaskill/McAskill entries in the Arichat Anglican Church records.
I have much more information on the children of William and Ann (Proctor) Maskell, all of whom emigrated to Massachusetts between 1884 and 1890. Please let me know if you are interested, related, etc.
