Michael,
I don't know if this will be any help or not. This is not my husband's direct line so I have not done any research on it. In the 1850 McDowell Census (next to Yancey), there is a Wm M. Mashburn, 21 (born 1829), which would fit this soldier. He is in the household of Hodge Mashburn, but I can not find him anywhere else. Maybe someone from this line can be of help.
