My great great grandfather was August Marx from East Prussia. This is the info I have on him - I don't know if the Wilhelm mentioned may be the one you are looking for (or maybe his son). The Frederick Wilhelm mentioned is my Grandmother's father. Does any of this sound familiar? August Marx & Wilhelmine Lewald 1841 - 1945 August Marx was born on a family farm in a small community near Konigsburg, East Prussia in about 1841 and lived there until he entered the Prussian Army. He served in the Military during Bismark's reign who was then the Czar of Prussia. August married Wilhelmine Lewald and they had three sons born in Germany - Wilhelm (born 1862, died 1946 in Germany), Karl (born 1865, died 1905 in Germany), and Frederick Wilhelm (born 1867, died 1954 in Wisconsin). For a short while after his military career, August was the Chief of Police in the City of Danzig (Gdansk). He later returned to the family farm. He still lived in 1939 when his oldest son talked with him by phone. This was the last contact with him. A story came back that the entire community attempted to evade the advancing Russian army in 1945 and the group boarded a transport vessel in Danzig which was to go to Sweden. This vessel was torpedoed by a Russian submarine and all were lost. August Marx, his wife Wilhelmine and other Marx family members may have been on this ship sunk in the Baltic Sea. (Note: "The Last Cruise of the Wilhelm Gustlof" written by Michael Martin, a free lance writer based in Milwaukee. This document narrates a factual story of how this German ship, loaded with passengers and evading the advancing Russian Army was stalked in the Baltic Sea, torpedoed and sunk by a Russian submarine with the loss of thousands of civilian refugees. This occurred on the 31st of January 1945 with only 964 rescued of the more than 8000 passengers aboard. This submarine also torpedoed two other passenger ships in the Baltic. On February 9, 1945 it sunk the General Stuben with a loss of more than 3000 lives and on April 16, 1945 the Goya was torpedoed with a loss of an estimated 7000 refugees.)
