Actually, many Jews in Spain - Sephardic Jews- took names which could be associated with Christian saints - such as Martin or Martinez. They did this because there was much pressure to convert in Spain before the expulsion in 1492.Then, the Jews in Spain were expelled in 1492 unless they converted.Remember, 10% of Spain was Jewish at that time, and Sephardic Jews were the dominant Jewish culture in Europe. It is a well known fact that many of these Jews, then called "conversos" or "marranos" or even "new Christians" came to the New World - including the areas of New Mexico where many Martinez family members are found. In the Spanish colonies, like Spain, Judaism was basically illegal and so people had to practice secretly - after the expulsion.Actually Martinez is a name that is associated with Spanish Jews - as are many of the names found in Northern New Mexico area - and Southeastern Texas.Do some more research - there are sites on the internet that have to do with Sephardic Jews that can show you that this name was used by them.Don't be so quick to call something "bull" unless you have researched it thoroughly.Max Valerio
