Duke, I should have included this from the Cordwainer book, too. This is Judge Elijah B. Martindale. He was the one born in the same year as Elijah M. Martindale, it seems:

170ELIJAH BISHOP (6) MARTINDALE (Elijah (5) John (4) William (3) William (2) John (1)), b. in Wayne county, Ind., 22 Aug. 1828, but grew up in Henry county to which his parents moved in 1832. At age 16 he was apprenticed to harness maker, to learn the trade. Married (1) Amelia Mansfield. In 1854 he m. (2) Emma Taylor, daughter of John Taylor. He studied law and eventually became a lay partner of Judge Joshua H. Mollett. In 1855 he was prosecuting attorney of the district of which Henry county was a part. IN 1862 he moved to Indianapolis. He was elected to the state senate in 1869 and in 1975 became proprietor of the Indianapolis Journal but sold it in 1880. He was a national commissioner of the World’s Colombian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. In 1899 he was president of the Indiana Board of Trade and of the American Central Life Insurance Company. He was said to have had an extraordinary talent for business. He d. 28 Feb. 1910. He was known as “Judge Martindale.” (Refs. 22, 23.)

Emma was very found of mother left mother most of her belongings. the widow asked mom outright at luncheon why Emma perfered mother to bob. I told her I simply didn’t know. Don’t now if she felt sorry for mther mariired to an aarmy person she liked dad a lot she was ery fond of him always giav mther thing suaghter she ejnver had mother was the executior of her e

Elijah Bishop, Jr., b. 1875; m. ________ _______, colonel, C.A.C., U.S. Army; one daughter.
