This is just a few pieces of incidental information I got from a book called "The Old Brethren" about the Church of the Brethren in Ohio in the years between 1820 - 1850, The Miami Valley Geneaology Site covers parts of KY, IN, & OH) or the Church of the Brethren website -
In the years 1827 & 1828 John Martin and Thomas Chenowith transported all of the goods sold in Darke County, Ohio to the market in Dayton. Each used a wagon and four-horse team. They also imported all the goods sold in Darke County for those years.

in the 1780's a man named Samuel Boyd was the first settler in Darke County. His daughter married Robert Martin and was still living in 1887.

In 1788, The Corbly family was attacked by natives on their way to church meeting. The father and three oldest children were killed and scalped. Two girls managed to survive being scalped and recovered. Delia married Levi Martin and they had 10 children. "Her wounds extended down her head as wide as 2 hands. She trained her hair to grow upwards and it seemed to offer some protection. She suffered from severe headaches which she attributed to her injury" (I bet!)

They followed a main Indian trail and resettled near Dayton in 1805. They were joined by other members of the Church of the Brethren. The earliest families included (my connections) Smith, Martin, Karnes, Minnich, and Heckman.
