It seems a little late to post---but I didn't find this ancestor until to-day.
I believe, after doing a great deal of reading to-day, that your interpretation of Garneau's history---that you hit it on the head. I was about to piece this together and I decided there had to be two marriages. One a bush, native marriage. Then later another marriage with a local metis girl and I mean girl (13 or so years old).
Most descendants say that he married another Margurite from france born 1596----but her last child would have been born in her 50's (not very likely)Besides he had a yen for very young girls. I contacted Garneau a couple of times and believe me he has opened up this issue with "half breeds" in New France. Up to 1635, most of the women were "half breeds", des "savage", that many Quebec families have refused to admit! (From Canada)
