Sarah:
Have you tried DNA testing yet?Family Tree DNA is where I got tested, and through that I've hooked up with unknown cousins in Australia and Scotland. If tracing male lineage then he could be Y-DNA tested which tests for DNA in the Y Chromosome, which is only found in males, and is passed down with a specific signature from male to male for centuries.Adoptions or female infidelity tend to throw a wrench into it however.Once tested, then he could use their free public website ysearch.org to try and find matches with other Y-DNA from any other lab in the world. FTDNA also supplies you with matches of people from their site. Its a complicated subject, but I've written a little about it at http://fhsofmartin.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=467http://fhsofmartin.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=467 which is a little used 'Martin' forum website. You'll find it under the topic "A DNA Puzzle".For more info of any kind, I'd be glad to try and help since I'm a retired single male with no life to speak of.:-)
