FAMILY NOTES
General Note: John and Elizabeth were married on September 5, 1776 by Hezekiah Balch. Reverend Balch also christened their first born Elizabeth B. Martin in 1777. Church research shows that Hezekiah Balch ministered at the Presbyterian Church on Tom's Creek Maryland from 1775 until 1779 and at Piney Creek 1775-1779. After 78 years at Tom's Creek the old church was torn down in 1839 and rebuilt in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Earlier names for Tom's Creek were "Silver Fancy" and Poplar Fields.
John Martin and his wife became members of the First Presbyterian Church of Baltimore May 1,1780 and was again on the membership list in 1783, per Church records listed in the Maryland Historical Magazine Vol. XXXV, Sept. 1940, No. 3. The Church was located at Gay & Fayette Streets 1763-1766 and then at Fayette & North Streets through Rev. Patrick Allison's tenure ending 1802.
Research Notes ;
1790 Maryland Census, Baltimore County, Baltimore Town John Martin listed as head of household with 8 Free White Males over 16 years old (including head of household, 4 Free White Males under 16, 3 Free White Females and 3 Slaves. Consistent with our John Martin Family at that time with regard to young males and females. Large number of males over 16 may have been other family or trade apprentices, etc.
_____________________________________________
Parents of John Martin; Chester County, Pennsylvania was an original County, founded in 1682. Part of Chester County became Lancaster County in 1728; part of Lancaster County became York County in 1749 and part of York County became Adams County in 1800. John Martin's parents may have lived in Chester County just north of Fredericks County, MD. If this is so they would have been living in what is now Adams County, PA. In 1751 part of Chester County became Berks County and part became Delaware County in 1789. Chester County's seat is now West Chester.
Following naming traditions, John Martin's parents would have been William Martin and wife, Rebecca.

Correspondence to solicit subscriptions in 1775 to purchase arms and ammunition.
Associator in 1775 and appointed "to hand about the Association paper" in Tom's

the 25th) Battalion in 1776. Chosen to serve on the Committee of Observation on
September 12, 1775. Judge of the Orphans Court on June 4, 1777. Juror to the
Oath Allegiance in 1778. He died on November 26, 1778, testate, leaving a wife
Hannah, daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Naomi and Hannah Susanna Francisca, and sons
Samuel and John.
In the 1790 US Census there was only one Blair family listed in Frederick County, Maryland. The head of the household was Samuel Blair with 4 other free white males of 16 years or older. No females listed.
The naming of the children of John and Elizabeth closely follow the Presbyterian Blair ministers from Faggs Manor in Chester County, PA. Elizabeth may have descended from Rev. John Blair, son of William Blair, brother of Samuel Blair and brother-in-law to Rev. Robert Smith, who married John's sister, Elizabeth Betsy Blair.

He had been confined to his house for some time past. Dr. Martin was of the old school of Baltimore physicians, and was a successful practitioner before many now well known medical gentlemen were
