In the Origin of Certain Place Names in the United States, I found:
Martinsburg ; town in Berkeley County, West Virginia , named for Col. Tom Martin . a nephew of Lord Fairfax , a wealthy landowner.
Martinsburg, WV, the county seat of Berkeley County, was originally chartered in 1778, and named in honor of Colonel Thomas Bryan Martin, nephew of Lord Fairfax.
