Joan:

My name is Dominic Marsden and I live in Key West, Florida but was born in 1953 in Sheffield. Many of these names are familiar to me but I'm not sure how I fit in.

According to the 1901 census - John Edward Marsden was born in Sheffield. We have recently found his middle name, Edward, and that he was actually born in Boulton, Derby. His fathers occupation was given as Railway Painter.

"I don't know of John Edward Marsden ... strangely enough I don't even know the name of my grandfather who died soon after the First World War (problems related to mustard gas inhalation). He was rarely talked about. My grandmother was an Elliott (Doris Elliott born in 1900)"

"Now here's where I pick up the thread, maybe. Many of these names are familiar to me although I'm not sure why."

William MARSDEN married his first wife, Clara BULLOSS, in the Parish Church of St Mary, Walkley, Sheffield in 1888.

He married his second wife, Ellen GREAVES, at the Parish Church, Sheffield.

"My grandma, had two children Herbert Haywood Marsden and
Joan (co-incidence?) Marsden. She would take me, with them to visit a Mrs Greaves....I never did work out who Mrs Greaves was or why we would visit, but I was just a five year old at the time. Mrs Greaves was old and I think I was a little frightened of her which is about all I can remember"

William and Ellen had the following children (all born in Sheffield between 1895 and 1916).

Charles William - John E - Violet Ellen - Elizabeth Jane - Nellie - Ernest William - Elsie - Florence Winifred.

"I remember my grandma taking me to see Aunt Nellie, Auntie Flo, I remember Aunt Elsie and the name Violet. I always thought they were her family (Elliotts)...it never occurred to me that perhaps they were her late husband's (Marsdens). Of course, it was all the women I met...and they were married so none had the same last name which added to the confusion."

Oral history says that John worked in the Labour Exchange. Charles sold fruit and veg - but we dont know if he had a shop, a market stall or a barrow. Violet became a nurse and left Sheffield.

"My mother is coming to Key West tomorrow, from the UK and I bet she can shed some more light on this for me. - and you! My father passed away some years ago."

I am still hoping that someone will recognise the above
family and can help me to fill in the gaps.

"I don't know if I'm helping here but perhaps that adds some padding to your search. Incidentally, my Auntie Joan (father's older sister) is still alive and lives in Sheffield and I will pump my mother for info about my grandfather when she arrives. I will try to add more."
