I recently discovered that my g-g-g-grandfather was James Marsden. James was born in 1840-1, most likely in England or in Orange County NY (probably Middletown).
In late 1860 he married English emmigrant Catherine Ellen, daughter of Thomas and Eliabeth Ellen of Kent, England, who had settled in Warwick, Orange Co., NY. Before the marriage, Catherine was working as a servant in the home of Rev. and Mrs. Vandeveer. Her parents lived on the neighboring property.
In August of 1861, James Marsden joined the 56th NY Infantry Regiment, Company D in Newburgh, NY. The regiment was comprised mainly of Orange County boys (the famous 'Orange Blossoms').
His wife, Ellen, was about 2 months pregnant when he left for war. That April, she gave birth to a son, WILLIAM E. (Ellen) MARSDEN.
6 months later, James died in Yorktown, VA (October of 1862) at the age of 21. It is doubtful he ever saw his son.
By 1870, Catherine Ellen Marsden had re-married a Swiss-born physician named John Peter Aburtis (sometimes spelled Albertis, or Albertus).
I would like to know more about James Marsden, but have hit a brick wall.
I cannot find ANY 1850 or 1860 Fed. Census reports that mention James.
His son, William E. Marsden, lists his father as having been born in England in the 1900, '10, '20, '30 census. William went on to father a LARGE family of seven children. Today, there are many Marsdens (mainly in NJ) who are descended from James Marsden,
However, I find no record of a James Marsden coming to the U.S. who matches his description. Neither is there a James Marsden or a Marsden family in (or near) Orange County at that time.
Can anyone help, provide information, or just good, old-fashioned advice on how to proceed? Thanks!
