No, this is most certainly the same person.I have his marriage record to Emma Purcell Barr in Monroe Co., AL.I'm trying to get the jest of this story.
James Daniel sold his plantation to Emma Purcell Barr's father Thomas G.(which reads as C. in her marriage record and in the land Records). And, from what I can find out Thomas G. Barr was also from Ohio.
I know from letters that James Daniel had much distain for what he termed "Carpetbaggers". And the Barr's and Capt. Marriott being from Ohio??Carpetbagger's?? or is there some other family connection that I'm not aware of .
The only CSA record of a William Barr called him "English".And I couldn't find anything more out about him.
Back to Thomas Barr (father-in-law to Capt. Cary Marriott)- the sum was $12,000 in Gold. Not a small sum of money - no matter how many acreas.I know that James Daniel had hidden his gold well enough to stand off several Union raids. And, was able to pay his Post-war Taxes - and then sell his property to Barr.
Also, there was a partial payment with more to be paid in 1867.The Daniel family had left the states in Mid-1866 (just after the sale of this property)for Brazil. How did that payment get paid??I didn't find any directions in the records.
It's just very strange that two Barr's come into their lives in such a big way and not have some kind of connection. And, Barr is not a surname that is common in AL.
Well, thanks for your reply.
Ruth
