Okay, so here's the real story of the Tavern:
George W. Marriner owned a ferry, along with his brother Andrew. This ferry operated between Kittery, ME and Falmouth, MASS. They were always having lawsuits over people not paying their fares, robbing and beating them, and so on.
So George got pretty fed up with the whole ferry business and went down the coast to find something else. There used to be a small river that went inland from Amboy, NJ, and just about ended at Ardena, where the Tavern is located.
Around 1744-45, George found a store at Ardena, sold his interest in the ferry to his brother Andrew and bought the store. They operated it as a store for a few years, adding on a living quarters and more rooms, and then got a liquor lis. and turned it into a tavern and restaurant.
It was owned by the Marriners and other family members for 105 years. The Tavern served as a meeting place in the Rev. War, and a man was hanged by the British outside the Tavern. It was also the meeting place of the notorious Fagen Gang of outlaws.
In 1889, the Tavern left our family hands and was sold to someone else.
